Ethylhexylglycerin — A Multifunctional Preservative Booster in Cosmetics

What Is Ethylhexylglycerin?

This multifunctional ingredient serves as both a preservative and skin conditioner in cosmetic formulations. It helps extend product shelf life by preventing microbial growth while simultaneously providing moisturizing benefits that leave skin feeling soft and smooth. While generally well-tolerated, it may cause mild irritation in some sensitive individuals, so patch testing is recommended for those with reactive skin.


Chemically, ethylhexylglycerin (C11H24O3, molecular weight 204.31) is a glyceryl ether — a glycerin molecule with a branched eight-carbon chain attached. That structure gives it surfactant-like behaviour: the glycerin end is water-loving and the carbon chain is oil-loving, which lets it interact with microbial cell membranes and increase their permeability. Commercial ethylhexylglycerin used in cosmetics is synthetically manufactured, from glycerin and 2-ethylhexanol.


Its regulatory position is often misunderstood. Ethylhexylglycerin is not listed in Annex V, the EU’s list of authorised cosmetic preservatives. CosIng lists its functions as deodorant and skin conditioning; CosIng is an informative database, and legal force rests with Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 and its Annexes. Its preservative-boosting activity is a formulation property rather than an Annex V preservative function. Mechanistically, experimental work has shown that ethylhexylglycerin impairs bacterial membrane integrity: Langsrud et al. (PLOS ONE, 2016) found that sub-lethal concentrations disrupted the membrane of Escherichia coli, and that 0.075% ethylhexylglycerin combined with 0.675% phenoxyethanol produced membrane damage and killing comparable to doubling the phenoxyethanol concentration alone. That is why the two names so often appear together at the end of an ingredient list.

What Does Ethylhexylglycerin Do?

Enhances Conventional Preservative Systems

Ethylhexylglycerin can increase the efficacy of the preservative it accompanies by acting on microbial cell membrane permeability. In some formulations this allows the required antimicrobial protection to be achieved with a lower concentration of the primary preservative. Whether that holds for any given product depends on the full formulation.

Softens and Conditions Skin

The glycerin portion of the molecule gives it emollient behaviour. CosIng registers skin conditioning as an official function, and it contributes a light, non-greasy softness rather than sitting on the surface as an occlusive film.

Controls Odour at the Source

Ethylhexylglycerin inhibits skin bacteria that break down sweat into odour compounds. This is its registered CosIng deodorant function, and it is why the ingredient appears in aluminium-free deodorants that work without blocking perspiration.

Ethylhexylglycerin is stable across a broad pH range — supplier data for sensiva SC 50 gives pH 3–12 at a use level of 0.3–1% — and is compatible with many commonly used cosmetic ingredients. Its surfactant-like properties can, however, influence emulsion stability or viscosity in some formulations, so compatibility ultimately depends on the complete formulation.

Generally suitable for: Most skin types. Ethylhexylglycerin is generally well tolerated at cosmetic-use concentrations, including in many products marketed for sensitive skin. It is, however, a recognised though uncommon contact allergen, so anyone with a confirmed allergy to it should avoid it.

Among 15,560 dermatitis patients patch-tested by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group between 2013 and 2018, 39 (0.25%) had a positive allergic reaction — a frequency the authors describe as comparable to other low-allergenic preservatives such as parabens, benzyl alcohol and phenoxyethanol. Our 5/10 rating is driven by one EU harmonised classification, H318 (serious eye damage). CIR reports that the undiluted substance caused severe eye damage in rabbits, while a 5% aqueous solution was only mildly irritating. Not a standalone preservative: Ethylhexylglycerin should not be assumed to provide adequate broad-spectrum preservation on its own. Whether a finished formula is adequately protected depends on the complete formulation and is established through microbiological risk assessment and, where appropriate, preservation challenge testing (ISO 11930) — not by reading the ingredient list.

If you react to products marketed as gentle: A 2016 Contact Dermatitis study described ethylhexylglycerin as “a low-risk, but highly relevant, sensitizer in ‘hypo-allergenic’ cosmetics”, precisely because fragrance-free ranges rely on it.
